Your Speed Test Is Measuring the Wrong Road

My connection tests at 99 Mbps, and its latency gets 25x worse the moment anything downloads. No speed test will show you that. They measure a stretch of road you mostly don't use, and the number itself is a construction rather than a constant. Then my own speed test lied to me too.

Tomcat Forgives a Blocking Call. My Event Loop Didn't.

A 5ms blocking call, the kind nobody calls slow, capped my Netty service at 549 req/s and pushed an unrelated endpoint to 217ms. The same call on Tomcat: 17,189 req/s and 0ms. Measured against real Netty and real embedded Tomcat, including the one-line fix that closes the gap.

Virtual Threads Made It 41x Faster, Until One synchronized Made It 25x Slower

I moved a blocking workload to virtual threads and it got 41x faster. Then one synchronized block made it 25x slower than the thread pool I replaced, and made an unrelated 1ms task take 7.8 seconds. Measured on JDK 21 with real sockets, including which mitigation works and which widely-repeated one does nothing.

I Stopped Asking the LLM What the Compiler Already Knew

I built a bot that reviews my merge requests and merges them on its own. The model is the least interesting part. The work was deciding how little it needed to do, and making every ambiguous path lead to a human.

Why I Couldn't Port-Forward a Redis Cluster

SSM port forwarding gives one local port. A cluster client wants a route to every shard's private IP. The tunnel was never the problem. Service discovery was. Here is the Node script I wrote to fix it on a Windows bastion.
